Ramadan Reflections: Day 21 Nafs Hack with Tariq Touré

Nafs Hack: Putting the Phone Away

Assalamu alaikum! This is Tariq here with IRUSA’s Nafs Hack. My Nafs Hack is this little device right here (points to his phone) that has so much of our attention, including mine.

During this month of Ramadan, we want to make sure that our attention as much as possible is on building our connection with Allah (SWT). So, in doing that, one of the most practical Nafs Hacks that I use for myself is that I never go to bed with this little bad boy near me.

This phone which has an alarm clock on it as well to wake me up for fajr, to wake me up to go run, to wake me up to go exercise, to wake me up to do a whole variety of things, is most always at least three rooms over in the kitchen, or in the living room—it’s where I have to go up and get it to be able to use it, or get it to be able to turn off the alarm.

So, Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said, “Trust in Allah (SWT), but tie your camel.”

One of the best ways of tying our camels is to be able to get up for qiyam, to be able to get up and worship and make that dua’a that you’ve been needing to make for those things that you want to have forgiveness for, is making sure that our phones are not in presence when we lay our heads down and go to sleep.

Thank you all so much for having me for this Nafs Hack. I hope everybody has a great Ramadan. Assalamu alaikum!
