Responding to California Wildfires When It Matters Most

What the West Coast is facing

In California, it’s been known for years that all it takes is a brief moment of wind to start a catastrophic wildfire. People who live in the state enjoy the welcoming weather and sweet aroma of the air, along with some of the most scenic landscapes in the country. But due to the fact that wildfires are a reality that looms over California, many remained prepared for the worst.

For those who haven’t been fortunate enough to make arrangements in the case of a fire, their need for support is incalculable. When Beth and Albert found themselves among the hardest hit by wildfires in Santa Clarita they found neighbors in IRUSA to help when they needed it the most.

Happy to Help

They watched the news with growing fear as the sand fire grew out of control in Santa Clarita Valley and headed straight for them.“Next thing I know, we have heavy smoke coming up the canyon and we have sheriff’s squad cars pulling into the lot and telling us on loudspeakers that we needed to be prepared to evacuate,” Albert said. “… Then they came in with the fire trucks and told us that we had a half-hour.”

When the couple went to a local assistance center set up by local government officials. There they found Islamic Relief USA’s team. “Islamic Relief USA helped us with the lumber that we need for my fiancé to put the ramp together for me to get back into my home,” Beth said from her wheelchair. “I’m tremendously grateful … Thank you all very much.”

Still on Watch

The threat of wildfires is still imminent in the region. IRUSA’s DRT team works with partners such as the Red Cross to ensure that families are aided when natural disasters like wildfires strike. We are proud to partner with the many first-responders who save lives and livelihoods.
