On World Poverty Day, Let’s Do All We Can to Mitigate Suffering
At Islamic Relief USA, every waking hour is devoted to reducing poverty. That’s why it was unusual when I learned there was a particular day dedicated to this cause.
According to the United Nations, October 17 is International Day for the Eradication of Poverty (also known as World Poverty Day). The UN first declared this day back in 1992.
While much progress has been made in the standard of living for many people in many nations around the world, poverty, if not extreme poverty, unfortunately remain common.
In the United States alone, there are some 38 million people living in impoverished conditions. To combat this, Islamic Relief USA conducts many events and programs.
Throughout much of autumn, one of these efforts is IRUSA’s Day of Dignity events in many major cities, including New York City, Philadelphia, Newark, Atlanta, Detroit, among others. In many of these areas, there are instances of concentrated poverty in certain neighborhoods, and extreme cases of child poverty.
When people come to Day of Dignity, they can receive essential supports like a hot meal, a winter coat, clothes and hygiene kits. This can go a long way to helping them get through the colder months, but it’s ultimately a temporary fix. That’s why in many cases, those served will also receive information on additional services or programs they may qualify for that can assist them with long-term needs.
In addition to Days of Dignity, Islamic Relief USA also holds meal pack events that feed thousands of people, with this year’s goal being to pack over 2 million meals.
Moreover, IRUSA has dozens of livelihood programs around the world that teach people how to grow food, provide education, and even start businesses. These programs are intended to help people become self-sufficient, develop marketable skills, and embrace their limitless potential.
While Islamic Relief USA is proud to positively impact the lives of millions around the globe each year, there are still millions more that desperately need help. That’s the sad reality. So on this day, let’s do all we can to help people living in poverty. Whether it’s volunteering or making a financial contribution, every bit of assistance goes a long way.
